I am going to put a precursor on this post. (Wait a minute....don't I always? ;-) It is a long one so if you would rather just watch the video, scroll down for the link. I heard that I am to share about addictions. I am not going to go into the science behind addictions. Nor am I going to go into details about what happens in the brain and why. I mean I will, but from the perspective I am to share...On we go!
When you hear the word addiction, what is it that you think of? Most likely the obvious ones. Addictions to drugs, alcohol, food, sex, caffeine, nicotine and maybe sugar. Then there are the one's that may be a little harder to identify, like addictions to exercise, tattoos, gambling, and spending money (buying). Of course their are countless other ones that we could talk about, right? Right. The ones that I am going to talk about in a moment have the potential to be even harder to notice. Especially if you have had the addiction your whole life.
Let's look at a basic definition of addiction. According to Psychology today, Addiction is a condition that results when a person ingests a substance (e.g., alcohol, cocaine, nicotine) or engages in an activity (e.g., gambling, sex, shopping) that can be pleasurable but the continuation of which becomes compulsive and interferes with ordinary responsibilities and concerns, such as work, relationships, or health. People who have developed an addiction may not be aware that their behavior is out of control and causing problems for themselves and others. I am sure we are all familiar with addiction and the basic definition. Maybe you even have or have had additions in one way shape or form, or know someone who does.
Let's shift gears (kind of). Take a deep breath, or as many as you need to, to be present in the moment. Feel into this question, "Are you addicted to emotions?" Does that ring true? The extremes of emotions can become very addicting. We all want to feel the high that we get from a new relationship, a new whatever. So we will continually do things to feel those emotions that we associate with the high. The flipside of those emotions is that we crash into what we deem the uncomfortable emotions. So we allow the Ego to talk us in and out of things, situations, relationships, jobs, etc. to continually feel those extremes. Our bodies can even get used to the extremes, so that we will feel emotions (or hear thoughts) so our bodies will feel those certain pangs, etc. We go through withdrawals when we are in the uncomfortable emotions and will do what ever we need to do to get out of them to get back to the high.
What is that sometimes called? The emotional roller coaster. It's a ride that can be very exhausting. Not only emotionally exhausting, but physically demanding also. Your body listens and feels all of the extremes you go through. We mostly refer to others taking us on an emotional roller coaster, when in fact its ourselves. Maybe this isn't describing you (although I can count on one hand the ones whom it isn't describing) Maybe you work on the balance between the extremes. Or maybe you have become addicted to a fantasy world.
Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of merit in dreaming and dreaming big to set in motion things that you are remembering in your life (manifesting). But check in with yourself, has it become easier to fantacize about a life you want to a life that isn't your current reality? Has it become easier to get swept away in your novels, tv shows or movies? Maybe your fantasy world is just all in your head? That you find yourself being more and more in your fantasies and your reality becomes painful and not at all what you want? Maybe you go throughout your life going from relationship to relationship, job to job, home to home, searching for the "right one," only to find out that you feel more hollow and go deeper into your fantasy?
Another form of addiction can come from spirituality. Going and trying out every modality, teacher, retreat, etc. under the sun. It becomes that obsession, that craving to know and experience more. To continually have DEEP spiritual experiences. To continually look outside of the self for the experiences, answers and knowledge.
Do any of these ring true for you? It's ok if they do. You don't have to say it out loud or to anyone else, ever. If they do ring true, take some deep breaths and know, that you aren't alone and there are things you can do. (and yes! There is support out there and I am an avenue for the support. :-) ) Can you guess what some of the main things are?
Take deep breaths. Bring yourself present. Observe the thoughts that are going through your head. Observe your body's reaction to the thoughts. Take a day or two or maybe a whole week and observe yourself. Do you find patterns of thoughts and emotions to experiences and situations? Maybe you need to observe for longer. This is not observation with judgement, this is just observation through neutrality. Do you find yourself deep in a fantasy world? Do you find yourself deep in novels, shows, etc? How about the spiritual realm? Is it obsession or a thirst for knowledge by the next teaching, modality, etc.?
If you can identify where you are at, then it does get easier to break the habit. It is not a necessity though. How can you break the habit(s)? By going within. Give yourself compassion. Recognize that you do have the answers you seek. It is great to ask for support, but know that the ultimate answers are within. Know that fantasizing takes us away from the present moment. When we aren't present with our thoughts, then we aren't able to receive our intuitive messages.
Another way is to acknowledge that we can have a balance with our emotions. The high that we continually search for, can be found within by connecting to the Divine through our heart center. The more we do this, the more we are vibrationally that high(appearance of a high). It is not a high or a low, we just are that. When this happens it can feel pretty neutral and sometimes it appears there is no emotion whatsoever. That can be taken as something is wrong. That you have gone numb. Check in, do you still have compassion for everyone, especially yourself? If the answer is yes, then you haven't gone numb. That is the balance of the emotions. But in the mean time, if you don't have the balance, PLEASE feel all of the emotions. Just take note if you are addicted to the highs and lows.
Please know you are amazing and are doing amazing things on your journey. There is no wrong path or wrong direction. There is no straying off of your path. You are the path. You are the way. And you are amazing.
